Depeche Mode
It's finally time for The Big One: DM at Arvika!!!
With a possy of legio the legends enter Vintergatan 2009. This is the one that all gossip's been on about since the first year, 1992, when a good 10 000 of the just over 22 000 that's showed this crop failed year weren't even born. Expectaions are so haussed that the whole shebang is about to blow and the religious feeling of the Kraftwerk show some years back's returned.

And as we progress through some unaccounted Playing The Angel track and Wrong from Sounds of the Universe we get to some minimalistic version of Walking in My Shoes we reach It's no Good. The audience seems ok, but definetly not more than that. It's a tired DM on stage so far, perhaps marked by Dave Gagam's cancer, but nevertheless tired, distanced and bored. Regardless of the rock version of the tune.

And we move on to A Question of Time - laden with heavy metal guitarrs on back tape and a single one on the increasing stomache of Martin Gore, deteriorating one of the Basildon act's most loved and perfected rubies of their crown into a plain mainstream tune. Sad!
And on to one of the Playing the Angel - the first single ; "thing's get damaged, thing's get broken..." - and regardless of crappy sound and a bored band the audience goes wild.
Next runner up is a rather good interpretation of Fly on the Windscreen from Black Celebration. And all is forgiven upon entering chant mode and "...finally I find that I belong here..."
But who does? This is out dated as MC Hammer, perhaps not on the turntable but definetly live with these tired and dented ol'timers. And my poor electronic heart weeps.

Yet another two spineless tune from Sounds of the Universe, so anonymous I don't even recall it's name, the audience digress and give into handclap. But the handclap dies down and suddenly we seem to be bystanding a wake; this is how it feels when heroes die.
Time to murder In Your Room with a foul drum 'n base chaos version of the poor hit. Maybe Dave'd been better off true to Uncle Charlie White? And still the crowd and my poorly fed expectations obey being the band's favourite slaves. Or at least we don't leave due to respect of days passed on.
It's now time to push up the daisies for I Feel You and I quiver throughout the intro in fear of what to come...but some juice's still in these ol' Basildon boys -this is actually quite fine. At least in contrast to the watered down crap so far.

Enjoy the Silence finally cracks a smile on our faces and the crowd actually spontaneous starts clapping again. Please, don't let any more words (of critique be) ver unneccesary. Please! Please...before Gore falls into coma and Andy Fletcher starts doing anything but looking bored.
Time for Music for the Masses and the big hit Never let me Down. Ate the lyrics a pleed, are the boys actually afraid their star is about to fall? Gore fronts again on lead guitarr and we try focusing on a slight hip wiggle to show sympathy. The waveing of the hands is at least present...
And they are off stage...
Time for encores.
First up is Stripped. And as they peel of any dignity left in the crowd we chant "let me hear you speaking just for me", wishing days gone to return to our pioneer spirit lost. Effectvive, but in no way blowing anything but smoke to us, the possy of diciples.
Next one is a version of Personal Jesus similar to pump dito... And we clap as were it the folk rock of our peers and cradle. At least the light engineer is more ambitious than his sound counterpart. And the siluttes of all the hard bodied women in the world won't cover the fact that one feels ironised by the selfproclaimed divinity the sharp sarcasm the hit originally advocated.
And that was it. Contrary to what it seemed - that stage was cleared in order to fit a concert piano - they were off for good.

Eagles of Death Metal
The Eagles of Death metal have invaded the Apollo stage and I just have one thing on my mind: THE DRUMMER! He's leading the band in a way I thought was reserved for Led Zep's John Bonham. Such force, such accuracy, such drive and confidence. I absolutely love it. Other than that, this band's music is truly classical asskicking rocknroll, which is fast becoming a rarity these days. Even though the sound at the Apollo stage is sub-par once again, this show rocks. No doubt about that.

NIN
Nine inch nails has taken the stage at Vintergatan, and the result is loud, heavy and harmonic. I can feel the bass pressure hitting the inside of my chest and throat like a ton of soft bricks. Combined with the screaming electric guitars and Trent Reznor's voice, this music is a force to be reckoned with. Trent is alternately playing the piano and a synth that sounds like rusty nails on a blackboard, but in a beautiful and celestial way. Extremely well arranged, produced and performed.

Röyksopp
On the appollo arena there is a uge crowd watching Röyksopp and when Robyn shows up the crowd goes wild. There is a sea of arms and heds bobing like there is no tomorrow. Röyksopp leads and the crowd explodes in electro fireworks lead on they by simple means; just the way we like it! They are even so considerate that they ask the crowd to back up so thr front row can catch their breath! Base thumping and melodies flowing like water. I just say get down there and enjoy the cruch!

Wine&Dine - Fogarolli
For those that like their caffeine served in the form of coffee, 'Fogarolli' must be visited. It's the big red mobile espresso bar by the Orion stage. The baristas are very skilled and the coffee is a little bit too good. I think I'm gonna have another, say The Ersatz crew

Detektivbyrån
Like a lullaby wrapped in rural nostalgia, Detektivbyrån delivers a cosy and therapeutic experiance. On stage, these, in lack of a better word, geeks, go the full circle back to cool, using a wide array of difficult and multifaceted instruments, whilst the audience is taken back to childish innocense in collective euphoria. The sound was perfect, the audience was roaring and they could easily filled a bigger stage.

DJ bootcamp - WESC
The DJ boot camp is pumping music. Funky electro house for the masses. The crowd is still small, but it's definitely jumping. Darren McCulley is playing right now. We like!
With a band spanking new soundrigg and an array of light effects, the WESC DJ camp provides powerfull entertainment at the small public campsite. They boast a good lineup and varied genres of music. Too bad it's almost deserted, apart from a few curious stragglers eloping the chaos of the campsite.

Santigold
Wow! What a suprise. This band really has something to offer any party. I am of course referring to Santigold. Their massive bass lines combined with rhythms from among other things dancehall, ragga and rockers reggae simply make me dance spontaneously. The lead singer has a pure and clear voice and her backup choir are just lovely on stage. They posess kind of a robotic and impersonal style that according to me functions as a perfect counterweight to the very visible dynamic of the rest of the band. The only thing I have to complain about a little is the absence of intimacy in the mixing of the sound by the sound technician. If it had been up to me, this band would not have wound up on a stage with so much natural reverb. The big hollow sound makes the place feel a bit empty. This music is best served in a small, sweaty and dark venue. Even so, the band itself gave a helluva show, wich left me wanting more.

Good one, Arvika - the water problem
Sometimes one just gets reminded of the simple luxuries in life. Like water for example. After a long, hard day in a baking hot car, slowly making our way to the festival, there are few things that feel as pleasurable as simply drinking water. Thank you Arvika for letting us bring our bottles of water into the festival-area. It is very appreciated by one and all and makes for a very easygoing general attitude. Good one!

Trekking with homies

You wish... When travelling with democrats one apparently needs to stop at every burger joint to pee and eat why not...
Yesterday the enterace collapsed under heavy rain but things seems to be back on track. We will report further upon arrival, provided we do.
Time to move!

We have now stopped at every fuckin' gas station, redneck shag and den we could muster in order to do this road trip as slow as humanly possible.
Let's pray we reach the festival before it closes down.

Last meeting with camera crew. Camera one is off to Tallin/Estonia but camera two is all systems go.
All is packed and the deepthroats and regular crew are filled in on their responsibilities.
We will post from the festival for the first time this year at 1500 hours tomorrow July 2nd.

Undaunted we indulge on the mission of delivering gossip and observations of dynamic as well as static behavior in front and behind the stages at Arvika Festival 2009.

In order to pilot our audience trough three days of total festival experiance we've drafted a number of informants deep under cover at various points of interrest. The deepthroats will provide their little nuggets daily sharpening the edge of this expermental new journalism blog.

The Idea of this Blog
Ersatz/Solholm Arvika Festival 2009 Blog
2009 will be the first year of hopefully many years of setting up these gossip files of observations during the Arvika Festival. It will cover as much as we put in it, edited by Ersatz/Solholm who will also be solely responsible for all content.
Dear participants, these are the terms and conditions:
Does:
You have volunteered to send at least 3 and at most 8 texts (SMS) at least 3 hours apart from noon July 1st to 3 a.m. July 5th with observations from the festival. These can be supported by pic’s or videos (cell phone produced and forwarded via MMS). You will also every day produce at least three 200-positions (approx. four standard texts/SMS) reviews of concerts or other entertainment from the festival. You can also do at most 1 interview with staff or an article on some aspect of working at the festival.

You do not have the right to alter or post yourself directly at the blog and you will not be credited specifically for observations. You will however not be held responsible for any reported and accepted observation, Ersatz PR&Event takes full responsibility for all and any postings.
